The Stout Reference Library is a non-circulating research library that consists of thousands of resources on the visual arts including books, magazines & periodicals, museum publications, auction catalogs, artists‘ files, and online databases. The library collection focuses on the encyclopedic collection of the Indianapolis Museum of Art while also providing general information about art and art history of all periods.
The library makes its collection available to students, appraisers, collectors, researchers, docents, IMA staff and others who conduct research on the IMA collections and the visual arts in general. Visitors may use the library‘s computers to obtain information from art and auction databases and to search the internet and the on-line catalogue. Teachers may arrange to bring students to the library by contacting the head librarian at least one week in advance at 317-920-2647.
The library‘s collection of approximately 120,000 volumes includes:
- Books, exhibition catalogues, and museum publications
- Magazines, scholarly journals and museum bulletins
- Files on more than 29,000 artists, including more than 4,000 Indiana artists
- Catalogues from auction houses, including Sotheby‘s, Christie‘s and many others
- Annual reports and other information from art museums worldwide
Photocopiers are available. Black-and-white photocopies cost 10 cents per page (5 cents for students with valid I.D.), and color copies are $1.50 per page ($1 for students).
